ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR
DESIGN OFFICE
Pier 70, san francisco
Bringing stage set design strategies into contemporary design offices to satisfy programmatic demands is the goal of this project. Instead of using traditional walls to divide space, this project uses moving objects to suggest boundaries.
Stage design demands objects perform in multiple ways. One object must descend to the stage, rotate, stop, and disappear. This idea provides inspiration for a movable office partition. The project required immersion into research of the history of Pier 70 and art movements of the early twentieth century. How the building program and use have changed over time are critical concerns of this project.
Creating a movable wall panel system allows a space to be divided from one into two and from two back to one. The project retains all historical concrete wall finishes as a time marker. The movable wall panels descend into space, connecting with a floor track system. These tracks recall the historic train tracks running through the area.
